However, 36 were set aside to become competition models, the GT350R®. Weight-the racer's enemy-was the main target and the 'R' model came in weighing nearly 500 pounds less then its street counterpart through the removal of many items including radio, heater/defroster, insulation, even the hood latch, making those hood pins functional instead of decorative. Most notable was the removal of both factory bumpers, the front being replaced with a fiberglass apron with built-in cooling ducts. Mustang body accurately molded in white polystyrene plastic.
